I fell on down in New Orleans
I woke up on the sidewalk with a hole in my jeans
Before these hands picked me up it made no sense
But there I was standing up against a fence
He had a long white hair and a beard the same
Introduced himself, never really got the name
He said “Son, let me give you some of my advice”
He started to sing and it sounded real nice, he sang
“Fi fi fiddley-i dee”
If you want to see the future just take a look at me
People come and people go
Life burns fast you’ve got to take it slow
He pointed down the street and said “That’s my bar.
If people see you drunk they really know who you are
Enough about me, what makes you think?
Let’s spill us some words and a couple of drinks”
He turned to go I. I started real slow
My body was aching from my head to my toes
Over his shoulder he said “Ain’t you gonna come?”
He walked with a rhythm and started to hum, he sang
“Fi fi fiddley-i dee”
If you want to see the future just take a look at me
People come and people go
Life burns fast you’ve got to take it slow
We met every day that week in his bar
We talked about jazz and the madi gras
We spoke about women and waxed about life
Laughed about good times and sighed about strife
He died one week from the day that we met
Though it’s been a few years I remember him yet
I’ve lived everyday and I don’t miss a thing
I loved how to lived and I learned how to sing, I sing
“Fi fi fiddley-i dee”
If you want to see the future just take a look at me
People come and people go
Life burns fast you’ve got to take it slow
